Do you believe in fate? Well, I do, and sometimes the universe puts me in the right place at the right time with the perfect client. Last year my husband and I sat down and made the decision that since I was done breastfeeding it was the right time to add Birth Photography back into my repertoire. Since my own birth I have felt so drawn to the journey and strength of the laboring mom and believe that it is so important to show that woman her inner strength just pouring outwards. I saw a referral for a Phoenix woman in one of my groups and jumped at the chance to be added to the list of potential photographers. Yes, there were other more experienced ladies, but I wanted my chance. After learning that Jennifer was going to be doing a natural birth at Blossom Birth Center I knew it was kismet that she agreed to meet with me!
If you remember tales of my own birth you’d recall that I was supposed to also labor at Blossom before I was transferred to St. Joe’s (but that’s another story, read it here). Just hearing Jennifer talk about her awesome midwife experience (and every other positive thing you can say about Blossom) I knew that that seat in that coffee shop was exactly where I needed to be. My first Birth back in the field absolutely needed to redeem my own transfer and watch another mom have the experience that was my “plan”.
I’m not going to gush for paragraphs and paragraphs, but here are a couple things that stick out in my mind:
1) I got all the warm fuzzies by getting to work side-by-side with the same birth workers who were my own caretakers for so many months.
2) Jennifer was AMAZING. I almost have no words, she worked so hard with her baby and did it with such grace and strength. To bring her rainbow baby earthside in such a loving environment was everything to watch.
2) Jennifer’s husband was the absolute picture of perfection of what labor support should be. (Benefit of taking a birth class together with your partner ahead of time, it’s technically their labor too, just a different type of story)
3) No other family was supposed to be at Blossom Birth Center during labor but since it was the days after Thanksgiving her sister was still in town visiting. Her strong, calm presence was so welcome to everyone in the room. And now she’s the best aunt ever 🙂
